🇦🇺 ULTIMATE OWNER
Casella Family Brands
Private · Griffith, NSW · Family-owned since 1969
🟢 Genuinely independent - profits stay in Australia
OWNS
[yellow tail]Peter LehmannBrand's LairaMorris of RutherglenBaileys of Glenrowan

The Casella family (Sicilian-Australian immigrants) built this from a Riverina farm in 1969. [yellow tail] is the #1 selling Australian wine in the US by volume. Genuinely family-owned at scale — one of the last major independents.

Note on Peter Lehmann:Peter Lehmann was a real Barossa winemaker who famously stood up to corporate wine buyers. He died in 2013; Casella acquired the brand in 2014. The brand still trades on his personal story — a genuine independent hero whose name now belongs to a different company. Transparency score: 7/10 for this brand specifically.

OWNS
McGuigan WinesNepentheTempus TwoBarossa Valley Wine Co.

Founded by winemaker Brian McGuigan in 1991. Australian-listed and Australian-managed, but ownership is institutional (ASX shareholders). McGuigan is one of Australia's most recognised wine brands — its independent-feeling heritage doesn't reflect its listed corporate reality.

Supermarket Phantom Brands

Coles and Woolworths have developed hundreds of wine brands designed to look independent. They carry stories about regions, families, and heritage. The address on the bottle is often a supermarket distribution centre.

“The address on the bottle is Coles HQ in Melbourne. The wine is not from the Barossa.”

- ABC Four Corners, February 2024

Case study: “Two Churches”

Barossa story on the label. Small-producer branding. The address on the bottle: Coles HQ, Melbourne. The wine is not from the Barossa.

What is a Virtual Winery?

🚫
No grapes
They don't grow any fruit
🚫
No land
They don't own a vineyard
🚫
No winery
Often no production facility of their own
They do have
A label, a story, and a price point

A virtual winery buys bulk wine on the commodity market - there is a literal spot price for bulk wine. It commissions a label, writes a provenance story, and sells at small-producer prices. This is entirely legal. It is not disclosed on the label.

The term “virtual winery” has been used within the wine industry since the 1990s. It is not a new phenomenon. But the scale has grown dramatically as supermarket chains have entered the private-label business.

Genuinely Independent Producers

These producers are family or independently owned, with no private equity or multinational parent.
